Dental Implants - The most natural false teeth available
Dental Implants - The most natural false teeth available
Everyone knows that tooth loss happens and everyone has a
relative who takes some or all of their teeth out to soak every night. We've
all heard of dentures, and many of us have heard of bridges, but have you heard
about Dental Implants?
Did you know it is possible to get false teeth that look
like real teeth, feel like real teeth and are mounted in your mouth like real
teeth? May I introduce you to dental implants, the most natural false teeth available.
What are dental implants?
There are two parts to a dental implant, just like a real
tooth there is the part you see and the part you don't. The top part is a false
tooth that looks just like a real tooth, while the bottom part (the actual
implant bit) is a titanium rod that holds the tooth in place, like the root of
a real tooth. The titanium rod is screwed into a pre-drilled hole in your
jawbone, in most people the jawbone then grows around the rod to provide a
stable foundation for your new false tooth.
Unlike normal teeth, which need one root per tooth, if you
need multiple teeth replaced you don't necessarily need a titanium rod per
tooth. The two part system allows for a number of combinations of teeth to be
attached to the one titanium rod.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
The most obvious benefit (apart from not having to take your
teeth out every evening) is that you no longer have an obvious hole in your
teeth line. For some people this can have a massive impact on their
self-confidence as their smile has been restored.
Another benefit that people don't always think of straight
away is the effect they have on eating. Dentures in particular have a tendency
to move a little bit during eating which can make eating certain types of food
difficult, if not impossible. Because dental implants are fixed in place, just
like real teeth, they don't move and therefore you can eat anything you can eat
with real teeth.
Can anyone have dental implants?
As is often the case, this treatment won't suit everyone and
a dentist will need to do some investigative work to establish whether you will
be able to have implants. The issue is all to do with the quantity of bone
available and a phenomenon known as resorption.
When you lose a tooth, the amount of bone that was
surrounding that tooth tends to reduce. The amount it reduces by varies from
person to person, for some it is not that much while for others it is a lot. The
implant is mounted in the jawbone just like a real tooth, and although the
amount of bone might increase slightly once the implant is in, there still
needs to be a minimum amount of bone to successfully install the implant.
If your dentist decides there is not enough bone to go ahead
with implants, this is not necessarily the end. There are other options, such
as bone grafts which your dentist will then go into detail with you about.
Are there any dangers?
There are always some risks associated with surgery and
having dental implants is no different. The main risk surrounds implants in the
lower jaw, where there is an important nerve and damaging it can cause
temporary or permanent numbness in the bottom lip. However, when the procedure
is performed by a skilled dentist who prepares by taking proper x-rays the risk
is minimal and the vast majority of people have no trouble.
For this reason it is very important to choose a good
dentist with experience in the field of dental implants. MSC Dental Implants Birmingham are
a great example of such dentists, they have been successfully fitting dental
implants since 1987, that's over 25 years. MSC's Dental Implant Specialists will take all necessary safety precautions to make
