What is a dental implant for?

If you worry about having gaps in your teeth and smile, a dental implant may be the right solution for you. Whether you have a small gap where only one tooth is missing, or a larger gap where you have lost several teeth, those teeth can be replaced to look as good as new and completely natural with dental implants.

Reasons to have a dental implant:

Whether you have a natural genetic gap in your teeth or have had an accident or an infection that caused the loss of one or more teeth, having a gap in your teeth can cause a number of problems.

Maybe you find that food gets caught in the space in your teeth, causing difficulties and pain when eating and making the exposed gum is more liable to cuts and infection. Maybe you don't like to talk so much because it exposes your teeth, maybe you're afraid to laugh, maybe you curl your lips in to cover your teeth as you talk, or maybe the gap in your teeth causes you to whistle when you talk. Maybe you feel self-conscious and embarrassed about your teeth.

By far the most aesthetically pleasing and sensually natural way to fill those gaps and prevent any further problems is to have one or more dental implants.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a high quality false tooth that looks real. The implant is fitted permanently into your jaw just like your other teeth and is designed to last a lifetime if cared for properly. The dental implant looks and feels just like your other teeth and does not need to be removed for cleaning.

The dental implant is formed up of two parts: the implant root, and a crown that fits on top. The implant root is a titanium rod that is placed into your jaw and holds the false tooth in place. Fitted to the top of the implant root is a crown that is designed to match and fit with your other teeth. If you need than one tooth replacing in a particular spot, one implant root can be used to support several crowns.

What's next...

The first step is to make an appointment with us to evaluate whether a dental implant is the best treatment for you. We will check the health of your gums, your jaw integrity and your oral health generally to ensure that your jaw and gums are healthy and strong enough to take implants successfully.

If you suffer from long term diabetes, osteoporosis or have had radiotherapy you may not be suitable for dental implants.

When you have been approved for dental implants, your dentist will take x-rays and impressions of your teeth. Your dentist will decide on the best positioning for your implant according to the x-rays. We will design your replacement tooth or teeth by matching the colour, shape and bite carefully to your existing teeth, using the impression to guide them.

Next you will have an appointment to have your implant (the invisible part of your new tooth/ teeth) fitted.

When the implant has healed and is settled and secure, which usually takes 6 to 12 weeks, you will have an appointment to have the visible part of your tooth or teeth fitted to the implant.

We will want to see you regularly for a few months, just to make sure that the implant is secure and healthy. You will need to take good care of your new tooth/ teeth, just as you do with your other teeth, to ensure that they continue to serve you well and look their best.

Finally you'll have the beautiful smile you've always wanted! Enjoy.

Dental implants from as little as £50 a month from our Birmingham dentists

Life doesn’t always quite go to plan we often have bills and payments that are unexpected. This also often happens when visiting the dentist. Our smile plan covers preventative checks and treatment and can help reduce the overall cost by providing discounts on many of the dental treatments that we offer.

Dental Implants are an ideal solution for somebody with a missing tooth or teeth, who has healthy gums and wants the most comfortable and natural result. Patient’s self-confidence after undergoing this treatment is often reported to have been considerably increased from having a fantastic smile.
Many people choose to have a dental implant in Birmingham because they have lost a tooth within their visible smile. Missing teeth can look unsightly and can also impact on speech. This is due to teeth being an important part of sound formation.

It’s common for people who have either missing teeth or gaps between their teeth, to whistle while talking. Problems with speech can also occur because people can feel the need to wrap their lips over their tooth line, in order to hide the missing teeth.

If you do have the misfortune of needing a dental implant even with our Smile plan the cost of your treatment can still be very daunting. Our finance plan however, can help you get your dental implant from as little as £50 a month. Midlands Smile Centres offer finance on treatments costing £500 upwards. This option is a good long-term investment to cover the cost of your implants in easy repayment instalments, we offer terms of between 12 and 60 months.
We have always endeavoured to ensure that our Birmingham dental practices are the most affordable in Birmingham. Our finance options will hopefully now mean even more people can benefit from our restorative and cosmetic services. If you have been putting off treatment and want to talk to someone about finance please contact our Selly Oak or Kings heath practices who can provide more information on dental implants in Birmingham

History of Dental Implants

A Brief history of Dental Implants

Dental Implants have become increasingly successful over the past few decades. With a large amount of scientific research and several years of clinical use which have helped to verify and validate their VALUE service in replacing lost teeth. Up to date implants have been used from around the 1970s although many improvements have been undertaken since then, the same theme and variation have remained the same.

The History of Dental Implants dates back as far as the early civilizations who recognised the benefits using different types of dental implants. Ever since humans have had technology they have been trying to create a life-like replacement for teeth, Dental implants go back hundreds if not thousands of years, with many different levels of success. The Mayan civilization is is the first recorded civilisation to use them dating back to 600 A.D.  Archaeologists discovered ancient skulls which had teeth replaced with different objects such as carved stones and fragments of seashells. Even though these methods were very primitive, and used very strange materials, the implants actually did fuse to the jaw bone.
The main success of dental implants came in 1952, when an orthopaedic surgeon realised he could not remove a titanium rod from a bone that where he had placed it to study how bones healed.
The process of titanium fusing to the bone is called Osseo integration (“Osseo” – bone; “integration” – fusion or joining with us)

Implants were first introduced to people who had difficulty using dentures, as they have lost too much of their jaw line  already, meaning there would be nowhere for the dentures to rest on. It was already well-known that Osseointegration was generally more successful in the dense bone on the front part of the lower jaw.
MSC Dental Implants Birmingham are a great example of such dentists. They have been successfully fitting dental implants since 1987. That's over 25 years been carried out. MSC's Dental Implant Specialists will take all necessary safety precautions to make sure your implants are fitted without any trouble.
